New Mexico

We started out the day today with Texas-shaped waffles. How awesomely delicious and fun! Poolie had cereal, too.

Then it was back to our room to grab our bags and head out for our first adventure... which was:

Cadillac Ranch. Awesome! It was 10 Cadillacs, noses buried in the ground. You were welcome to bring paint. In fact, of all the cans lying around on the ground out there, NONE of them were beer cans... they were all paint cans. Unfortunately, neither of us had any paint cans. Bummer.

The Ranch was out in a field in the middle of nowhere, just outside of Amarillo, Texas. There was a dust storm kind of thing happening now and then, and it was pretty windy out there.

We drove on for a while, looking for a good spot to picnic. We had things to drink, and things to eat, but the sun was so hot we had to wait until we found shade. Before we found that, we found this little town named for someone on Dland.. so, Mom on roof, look at this!

And shortly after that, we did find a place with shade and restrooms to have our picnic.

But the restrooms were being repaired, so we walked over to another building in the little park, which turned out to be a museum all about prehistoric animals that had been dug up in New Mexico. (The Blackwater Draw Museum) It had a life-sized head of a mammoth. Amazingly huge!

We wondered why the man who let us in wrote up a receipt. He told us we could use it to walk the dig site which was up the road a few miles. So after we toured the museum, we drove up to the dig site.

It was really hot, but we walked the whole site. They had posted informational signs at various points, and we saw most of them. It was really a neat place! They told me they are planning another dig for next year. We even saw a snowy owl!!

Then it was on to our next stop, Roswell! We were looking forward to seeing the museum but it was kind of a let-down, only having pictures of UFOs and testimonial letters written by relatives of the people involved. I guess I wasn't sure what would be there, but it was just one large room with framed letters on the walls, and just one group of pictures of UFOs. But I still am glad I went, because now I truly believe there was a cover-up.

We visited a lot of souvenir shops, and found a few fun things.

But then it was time to see if we could find UFOs for ourselves. We did see some clouds that looked like UFOs, and they would come and go relatively quickly. We finally just stopped and put on our hats...

Despite posing and appealing to the UFOs, and wearing our foil swan hats (shut up) no UFOs came to pick us up. Oh well.

I'm sure poolagirl will have some equally ridiculous pictures of me, so just click on her name to see them.

And onward we drove, into the sun. We drove through a lot of mountainous country after Roswell, some of it green and some of it not, but all beautiful country in it's own way. We finally got here to Alamagordo about 8, and after eating, we found a motel with wireless internet... not always as easy to do as one would think.

So that brings you all up to speed on our day today. We did so much today! We are both tired, but in a good way, and we have both destressed a lot, and had a blast in the process!

Stay tuned, and tomorrow you can read about our adventures on the way to Tombstone. Yay! We will be there soon, Rosie and Art!! Woot!

Any alien who saw your foil hat and failed to swoop down and abduct you is a fool, a FOOL, I tell you! Don't give up hope, though--they're bound to come around soon enough. Good travels to you! XOXO
