The past couple of days...

I had an interesting day at work yesterday. I worked in the main part of the store for the morning, and then after lunch they sent me out to the garden area. I love working out there; the afternoon breeze was so nice, and they were misting the plants, so if I got a little warm, I would just go stand underneath the mister.

When I went in to take my afternoon break, one of the assistant managers, Ronald, was just standing in the room. It didn't take me long to figure out what was going on.. one of the guys was taking everything out of his locker and either throwing it out, or stuffing it into a bag.

Yes, he was fired. Remember me talking about the "points" you get if you are late or overstay or understay lunch? He managed to get too many of them, and Ronald watched him clean out his locker, and then escorted him off the property. Bummer.

We were quite busy out in the garden area, too. Someone kept stealing our broom, so there was no way I could clean anything up, even if I had had time to do that. I did have time to move the empty plant trays all to one section and combine the half empty ones so the shelving looked better. Gee, it's not that hard, I don't understand why people don't do it. Ok, I guess I do understand. But the shelves with the plants on them just looked horrible.

I worked yesterday until 6:30, so by the time I got home and ate something, it was after 8. I worked again today at 8:30, but stopped at Henry's to pick up a few things.

Today I was handed a $100 bill that I really thought was counterfeit. I was not going to take it but the guy insisted, so I told him I would ask one of the head cashiers. One of them, Gladys, said it was ok, because it was just old. I didn't think it was age that made it feel so funny, and I was going to refuse it anyway (it always looks good to ask someone else, then you can say, "my boss said no") but before Gladys gave it back to me, she checked it with someone else who felt it and said NO WAY.

I handed it back to the guy and told him no, so he paid with a credit card. I suggested he take it to a bank, but the more I talked to him, the more I suspected he KNEW it was counterfeit, so I was glad that I didn't agree to taking it.

I really don't care what he does with it, I don't think it will get him very far.

I had looked in the Sunday paper at work and saw that Target had queen-sized inflatable mattresses on sale, with a pump, for $24, as a summer close-out. I was going to go today after work, but then I decided yesterday just to go and get it, since I was already out so late and it only would take about 15 minutes. I'm sure glad I went yesterday, because I got the last one left. Maybe other Targets have them, but this store is about 2 blocks from the Depot, and very convenient. Woot! The rest of the inflatable beds they had in queen size were well over $60!! And for the times I will be using it (when I get visitors) it's worth it. Not that my couch isn't comfy, but I think this will be even more comfy!

Time to eat, and then vacuum. Oh joy.

My husband has slept on those air mattresses and said they are wonderful. Congrats on that counterfeit bill--the stores around here use a certain magic marker when you give them a 50 or 100 bill-keep up the good work!

Good catch on the counterfeit bill. You're right - there's definitely a difference in texture between real and counterfeits. If in doubt, better to just say no.

Doesn't the store have a better policy on passing counterfeit money than just handing it back and accepting an alternative payment method? Here, you're obliged to report ANY attempt to "utter" counterfeit money to police, and give them a damned good description of the person. Even if your customer didn't knowingly pass the dodgy bill (although it sounds as if he knew full well it was fake), shouldn't it be reported so police can follow it up and track down its source? Have you ever actually clarified with management what YOUR legal position is over such incidents? I think you should! Love, R xxx

Good for you on catching that bill. I'm learning so much from you through all your experiences and HD is soo lucky to have an employee like you. I've slept on those air mattresses during visits home and they are indeed a lot more comfy than one might think!

You should get points deducted for noticing that counterfeit bill! And for cleaning and tidying your garden area. I've rarely worked with cash, so I doubt that I would have even noticed. Good catch!

We had one of those air mattresses before my parents gave us the AeroBed for Christmas, and it was really nice! The only thing is, the cats put a hole in it with their claws. Grrr. But you won't have that problem. Good eye on spotting the counterfeit $100!
