The sing along from last night

I'm sitting here in Rebecca's with my laptop, having yet more coffee. It was a very long day at work, seeing as how I didn't sleep well. It was either the coffee, the Mexican cocoa, or the sugar in all the cookies from last night that kept me up. Ya think? Tonight is open mike for readings. Yeah, I prefer the nights when the mike is open for music.

The music last night was amazing. AMAZING!! The night was hosted by Kev, a great guitarist in his own right. Tonight I can't remember who played first, but one of the first players was a Norwegian fiddler by the name of Kornflower. (What's the difference between a Norwegian fiddler and a cheese pizza? A cheese pizza can feed a family of four!) I love fiddles, and he did well on the Christmas tunes he played. Without his fiddle being electrified, the crowd had to keep quiet so we could all hear him. And he started the trend of actually listening to the performers. He set the standard, so to speak.

The crowd. There were probably about 75 people crammed into Rebecca's. It isn't that big of a place, and it was a full house last night. The performers deserved it. This was Rebecca's first annual Christmas concert and sing-a-long, although the guitarists were so amazing that no one wanted to destroy the magic and sing along! And even Santa himself put in an appearance! He was a big hit with the kids who were here last night. Yes, people even brought their entire families.

We heard from some awesome talent last night. Tom Baird played, and I think he was the one who sang the Hawaiian 12 days of Christmas:
1 myna in a papaya tree
2 coconuts
3 dried squid
4 flower leis
5 BIG FAT PIGS!!!
6 hula lessons
7 shrimp aswimming
8 ukeleles
9 pounds of poi
10 quarts of Primo
11 missionaries
12 televisions

Hilarious! He definitely had the crowd going.

Jon Earp played, too. Jamie Graham. Ricky Ruiz, the youngest guitarist there (and my favorite), had the crowd clapping with his rendition of Mancini's "Baby Elephant Walk". I would never have known the name of it, but everyone there knew the music. Ricky is a stupendous guitarist, and was definitely one of the crowd's favorites.

We also heard from Tom Boyer. Tom played some of his original music, and some songs that brought tears to the eyes of the crowd. I believe this video even is of the song he played last night, although the video wasn't made last night. As Kev said, "He brought his own stool, you know he's good!"

Truly a lot of talent in the building last night! And I've forgotten some; I counted eight guitarists. I know I've forgotten the names, but they were good, too.

Since it was basically an open mike, one of the audience members with a superb voice sang "Have Yourself a Merry Christmas" a capella, and did an amazing job. Kev played again, and then we had the grand finale, all the performers playing and (most) singing Silent Night.

And Rebecca's coffee, wonderful as always. Rebecca's served freshly baked apple scones with raspberry sauce, light, crispy sugar cookies, and date and nut candies. Delicious! The staff and the service is always great. I wish everyone could experience this just once. Truly, truly an amazing night.

I need to come here more often. Definitely!

Ask Poolie if that is a friend of ours, Jeff, playing drums behind the guitarist. I think it is, but hard to tell. An amazing musician himself.

Yup, that's Jeffrey. He was the percussionist for two of my shows! His wife is Claudia - an exceptional singer and daughter of Andre Previn. For real. No shit. These are amazing people!
